It would appear that increasingly more designers are trying their hand at the t-shirt business. I’ve noticed this to become growing trend within the last couple of years. There are plenty of incredible t-shirt lines available, and so many apparel companies to contest with, it appears as though an overwhelmingly daunting task for a young designer to get started in the clothing business. Well not necessarily, through taking things a step at the same time, come up with a plan, and tackle each task with an end goal under consideration obtaining your foot inside the door of the t-shirt industry can be easier than you feel.
This is not an article that will help you start up a clothing line with your existing designs. There is a good amount of info around already for this crowd. It becomes an article for an absolute beginner who would like to give Sublimation T-Shirt a go. We’re going to think about where to begin with inspiration for your first design, where and how to print it, as well as a little marketing and self-promo for good measure.
Becoming a designer I’m sure you have worked on a task that did not float your boat. An issue that bored you, or a subject matter that only failed to appeal to you. It will require the enjoyment from work. On the other hand, whenever your working on an issue that inspires you, suddenly it’s not work on all. It’s an issue that ignites a spark within you, and you end up going the excess mile to produce the project incredible.
Keeping that under consideration, you have to look for a theme just for this t-shirt design that inspires one to do something great. The theme could be anything from extreme sports to rock music. Anything is fair game.
Once you’ve selected a theme, do the necessary research to pinpoint the target audience. Understanding who you are designing for is essential in a killer design. Know whether your audience is male or female, 65 or 25, and what section of the world they are living in. Know very well what they appreciate to use, what colors, fonts and imagery they are drawn to. These represent the things you need to know and understand before putting pen to paper, or mouse at your fingertips to begin your design.
Seeing that you’ve found your theme and also you understand specifically who you’re designing for, it’s time to find just a little inspiration. In which you select this inspiration might vary drastically dependant upon your theme. For example, it could be a trip to the mens section of your neighborhood sporting good store, it will be browsing online for college style humor, or could be a journey to the coffeehouse where your target market gathers every day.
Get creative with your inspiration. In the end your only as great as what inspires you, so take the time here, and create a concept which will turn heads and acquire people talking.
When setting up your file to start designing there are various things to consider. How large will the graphic be? Might it be printed on light, colored, or black material? Might it be printed digital or silk screened? If it’s silk screened, how many colors is going to be printed? etc…
Make your new document with units set to inches since we’re doing work in print. 15 inches by 12 inches is usually the largest available screen-size when screen-printing. When designing maintain your amount of colors at 8 or fewer. The greater colors the larger the production cost, and a lot screen printers are not able to handle a lot more than 8 screens.
For digital printing you don’t should do a lot of prep work for print. Ink jet printers can print as many colors when needed, even a photograph is fair game. Digital is perfect for small run jobs, but many likely, you will end up screen printing a t-shirt design. To do that you will want to separate your colors into different layers. Screen printing involves printing each color separately, and so the printer will need to access each color inside your design.
In Adobe Photoshop it’s a simple few selecting your colors using the magic wand tool and copying them each to their own layer.
In Adobe Illustrator, it’s a bit different, yet still just like easy.
The trick to color separations in Illustrator is with the Pathfinder palette ( Window | Pathfinder ). Select everything in your design and select Trim from the Pathfinder palette. This basically removes each of the artwork that is unseen. In other words, bits of objects which are behind other objects.
Now select one color with the Magic Wand Tool (Y) and all sorts of objects of this same color should be come selected and judge Unite through the Pathfinder palette.
Now, from the Layers palette produce a new layer titled Separations, then create Sub Layers for every single color from the design. Then you can copy (Cmd C) that color and Paste set up in the new layer to go that color to it’s own separate layer.
When you have all colors moved onto their particular layers you may shut down each layer to discover the person colors. This permits the printer to easily access each screen when printing.
A part of marketing and selling your designs is displaying them using product mockups. The advantage of mockups is it enables you to present the design over a shirt well before you do have a printed shirt at hand. You can download the WeGraphics T-shirt Mockups here and here.
To your first design is probably not practical or affordable to print an inventory to obtain on hand. Especially since you are unclear what sells may be like with this particular design. Regardless, though, you should be aware of what printing choices available.
As outlined above one of the most traditional printing for t-shirts is screen printing. This method is among the oldest printing methods around, with origins dating to first-century China, 27dexjpky the technologies have improved significantly ever since then. This method involves dividing the colors in the design to enable them to be separately.
Digital printing is a wonderful means for handling lower run jobs. Some printers will print as little as 5 shirts at the same time. This may be excellent if it merely requires a couple of designs available to showcase in a portfolio, or wear out and about. There are actually no real color restrictions with digital printing. But, in my view, it doesn’t quite feel similar to a normal screen printed tee.
In past times couple of years on demand printers have begun to spring up on the internet. Vendors like CafePress and SpreadShirt. These vendors let you upload your designs, open an internet based store, and have your shirts printed upon order. This is an interesting solution to get a one man design shop. Shop around on these vendors, quality and experience can vary from a single to the next.
